Medicare is divided into the following four separate parts:

Part A

✓ Pays for hospital services and is FREE if you or your spouse made payments into Medicare payroll taxes for 40 quarters (10 years). Otherwise, you will have a low monthly premium.

Part C

✓ Medicare Advantage, otherwise known as Part C, consists of plans offered by approved private health insurance companies like Aetna, Anthem, Humana and United Healthcare.

Part B

✓ Costs about $165/month (subject to income surcharges) for new enrollees. Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient services.

Part D

✓ This is the prescription drug part of Medicare. Premiums vary depending on the plan, but Part D typically ranges from $10-$110 per month.

Medicare Supplements (Medigap)

Lastly, if you plan to enroll in Medicare A & B but not Medicare Advantage (Part C), then you will need a Medicare Supplement to fill the gaps in your coverage.
